When "Vote Your Conscience" Comes With Conditions

Every election cycle we're told the same thing. Research the candidates. Read their voting records. Make an informed decision. Vote your conscience.

Unless, apparently, your conscience reaches the "wrong" conclusion.

Today I spent some time reading through a discussion in the Southwest Washington Democrats Facebook group after one member explained why they could no longer support Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. They weren't telling anyone else how to vote. They weren't trying to convince anyone to agree with them. They simply said that after looking at her voting record, they could no longer, in good conscience, support her.

That should have led to a conversation about her voting record.

Instead, it turned into an attack on the person who brought it up.

People accused them of helping Republicans. They blamed them for what could happen in November. They called them selfish. They told them to "grow up" and fall in line. Before long, nobody was talking about Marie's votes anymore. They were talking about the person who dared to question them.

This Isn't Debate. It's Bullying.

Reading through the comments reminded me of high school. Every school had cliques. If you dressed wrong, liked the wrong people, or questioned the unofficial leaders, the group made sure you paid for it. That's exactly what I saw in that comment thread. The names have changed, but the behavior hasn't. Instead of lockers and lunch tables, it's Facebook comments. Instead of whispers in the hallway, it's dozens of adults piling onto one person because they refused to follow the crowd.

Let's call it what it is.

It's bullying.

What Tribalism Really Means

It's also tribalism.

Tribalism is what happens when loyalty to your group becomes more important than truth, principles, or accountability. The tribe comes first. Facts come second. It no longer matters whether your candidate made the right vote or the wrong vote. What matters is defending your side and attacking anyone who questions it. Once politics reaches that point, independent thought isn't welcomed. It's treated as betrayal.

That's exactly what I watched happen.

So Which Is It?

Political parties love telling people to think for themselves. They tell us to educate ourselves, research candidates, and study voting records. But when someone actually does that and reaches a conclusion the group doesn't approve of, suddenly independent thinking isn't so admirable anymore. Suddenly they're accused of betraying the party.

So which is it?

Do you want informed voters, or do you just want obedient ones?

Candidates aren't owed votes simply because they have a "D" or an "R" after their name. They're supposed to earn them. Every election. Every single time. If someone looks at a candidate's record and decides that candidate no longer represents their values, that's not an attack on democracy. That's exactly how democracy is supposed to work.

Attack the Person, Ignore the Record

The part that bothered me most wasn't that people disagreed. Disagreement is to be expected. Healthy debate is part of politics. What bothered me was how few people even attempted to defend Marie's voting record. Instead, they attacked the person pointing it out. That's usually a sign that it's easier to attack the messenger than defend the message.

Team Politics Is Destroying Independent Thought

I've noticed something over the past several years. Democrats accuse Republicans of acting like a cult. Republicans accuse Democrats of acting like a cult. Then both sides turn around and demand absolute loyalty from anyone wearing their jersey. If you question your own side, you're treated like a traitor. If you refuse to pick a side, both sides come after you.

It's like watching the Bloods and the Crips argue over who has the better morals while they're both trying to jump anyone who refuses to join a gang.

No thanks.

Your Vote Doesn't Belong to Anyone

Your vote doesn't belong to the Democratic Party. It doesn't belong to the Republican Party either. It belongs to you, and you should give it to the person who earns it. That's all the original poster did. They looked at the evidence, made a decision based on their principles, and explained why.

If that makes people uncomfortable, maybe they should spend less time bullying independent voters and more time asking why those independents lost confidence in the first place.

The moment political parties expect loyalty instead of earning it, they've stopped treating voters like citizens and started treating them like property. That's a dangerous road to go down, and judging by that comment thread, we're already farther down it than a lot of people realize.
